9. Radiation measurement and analysis applied in geoscience

Instructors Dr. Makoto Kobayashi and Dr. Takuya Saze

The atmosphere of the earth circulates perpetually, and the mechanism and the prediction of this circulation is still unclear. The cosmic-ray from the galaxy comes to the earth and interacts with the molecules in the atmosphere. By this process, the radioactive elements generated in the atmosphere. Also, the radioactive isotopes of soils and rocks still survive from the birth of the earth. These radioactive isotopes are detectable by their radiation, and work as ‘tracer’for the circulation of atmosphere in the environment.
In this class, we will learn how to measure the radioactivity and identify the radioactive isotopes exist in the environment. Then, we will predict the circulation of atmosphere by tracing the transport of radioactive isotopes.
