11. Earth and environmental sciences using radiation measurement

Instructors Dr. Makoto Kobayashi, Dr. Takuya Saze

The Earth’s atmosphere is circulating and its details have not been fully understood yet. A cosmic ray from the galaxy is flying toward the earth. This cosmic ray reacts with atmospheric components and radioactive materials are generated naturally. In addition, natural radioactive substances generated at the birth of the universe still remain in the soil of the land. In this topic, we will learn how to track (tracer) the circulation of the Earth’s atmosphere by observing the transfer of natural radioactive materials from the atmosphere and soil.
